Advancing Technology

D2-ROVThe Advancing Technology program is the lead within the Office of Ocean Exploration and Research for promoting advanced technologies and innovative use of existing technologies across the spectrum of ocean exploration. The program works both internally and externally, supporting technology activities onboard the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, in partnership with government agencies, academia and the private sector.  (click here to learn about the new Okeanos Explorer ROV Deep Discoverer)

Our goals are to:

  • Identify and prioritize ocean exploration data collection and dissemination challenges requiring a technological solution

  • Evaluate and transition new or refined advanced underwater technologies, platforms, instruments, and sensors to advance ocean exploration and research

  • Invest in new and emerging technologies for creative adaptation to address ocean exploration and research needs

Task Force for Ocean Exploration and Research Technology and Infrastructure (TFORT)

TFORT is an interagency task force established by the Subcommittee on Ocean Science and Technology (SOST) Interagency Working Group on Ocean Partnerships (IWG-OP) to advise, assist, and make recommendations to the IWG-OP on policies, procedures, plans and activities related to ocean exploration and undersea research technology and infrastructure.  NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research co-chairs the Task Force with the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences. Federal government members include NOAA, NASA, NSF, ONR, BOEM, and USGS. The TFORT has established a 5 year goals and priorities plan that calls on the Task Force to:

  1. Develop a catalog of priority Ocean Exploration and Undersea Research Technologies.
  2. Investigate technology solutions prioritized in the catalogued above.
  3. Communicate technology needs, solutions, and technology partnership opportunities to government agencies, private industry, academia and the public.
  4. Identify potential funding to further the use of high priority ocean exploration and undersea research technologies.

More information on TFORT, as briefed at the Marine Technology Society/IEEE Oceans 2013 conference Sep 24, 2013, is available here: Interagency Task Force on Ocean Exploration and Research Technology and Infrastructure (TFORT) (pdf. 6.69 MB).
